Simplified Sukla Yajurveda - Chapter IV

Chapter IV has 34 hymns

1. Act on the teachings of the Rig, Sam and Yajurvedas to end all miseries. (I feel this is one of importnat messages of the vedas. People have to learn and then act on the learning. Result will come only after action is taken. Behaviour only gives results)

2. Pure water removes all external physical imperfections. Good habits in the form of adequate food and adequate control over indulgences (not exceeding the limits prescribed by learned people, we can now interpret as doctors) will give beautiful, comfortable, healthy and strong body.

3. O Sun! give me the gift of vision. give me the gift of splendour.

4. O Lord! purify me through sun-rays and your purifying powers.

5. O sages present in the yajna, we pray to you to perform the yajna to fulfil our desires.

6. The priest of yajna calls for everybody to listen to the mantras and observe the various actions as the yajna is being performed according to its specified routine by him.

7. He also says we perform the yajna for desire fulfilment, as a good religious act, for the propagation of vedas and activities prescribe by vedas, for enhancement of knowledge and wisdom. In the yajna, laws of Dharma are propounded, austerity is practised, teaching and learning takes place, and philanthrophy is practised.

8. Every mortal man must seek the friendship of the Guiding God. Every man should use his arms and legs for acquiring wealth. Every man should do wise deeds to become strong and acquire riches.

9. I commence using the prescriptions of Rig and Yajurvedas in the yajna. O Yajna! give me happiness.

10. The person performing the yajna says to the priest, " O learned person, I depend on you for my advancement. Accomplish this yajna with recitation of vedic texts and protect me from the misery of sin."

11. We pray to the philosophic, meditative and energetic sages to help us, encourage us and guide us in doing noble deeds.

12. O learned men, the water is important for our life. May the water supplied in this yajna be of pleasant taste to all of you.

13. O learned men, help us to live long life.

14. Fire provides help to us in many ways. When we are awake it helps us. When we are sleeping it helps us. We should use fire properly. (We should able to start it when we want and we should be able stop it when we want).

15. O God, save us from misfortune.

16. O God give us wealth and riches by helping us in completing the various assignments (vows) that we take up to generate wealth.

17. O man, this body of your is made and reared for the service of God and service of his creation. By being energetic in your service, gain splendour and lustre. Be active through knowledge (This is another very important statement. Knowledge and action. Action that is based on knowledge is yajna).

18. O God, grant me mastery over the speech.

19. O speech, you are very powerful. O breath, you help me in speaking.

20. O speech, you along with God favour me. Speech is friend of learned. Mother, father, brother, friends and society should help people in learning.

21. O speech, the learned person use you for being happy and creating happiness among people.

22. O speech, through you only veda is preserved.

23. O speech and vedic texts, bless me with success.

24. O learned persons, use Gayatri, Trishtup, and Jagati verses to teach me kingship. Develop me and develop this knowledge in the process. (Every teacher develops his students as well as develops the subject in the process).

25. God! I adore you as creator of the earth and sky. You are the bestower of happiness to all. May all mortals enjoy long life and happiness through my yajna.

26. In the yajna, the performer gains his wishes, becomes wealthy and from that wealth he has to offer the priests cash and kind.

27. Kings are invited for yajnas. He is beng addressed in this hymn. O great king, all these subjects assembled in this yajna work under your direction and protect its prosperity. You have to protect them from the enemies of the kingdom.

28. O God! persuade me to right things, dissuade me from doing sinful things. May I enjoy pleasures of life by being blessed by you.

29. A wise man overcomes all vices that destroy his body and gathers wealth. May we also follow that path with delight.

30. O God, you only created this complex world.

31. God only created the horse with the speed, cows with milk, humans with intellect, medicinal plants and sun in heaven.

32. O God, you can be understood by the contemplations of learned men. We worship you.

33. Let man and woman learn household duties to become fit bear the burden of domestic life, live together and be united in their married life. They should visit the houses of religious (knowledgeable) persons, make them happy and learn more from them frequently.

34. O learned man, go all over the world and learn more from sages situated in different parts of the world.

35. Even though you are learning from sages, do not forget that the ultimate almighty is God. Pray to God, the Friend of all.

36. O Lord, you only make us reach the destination of true and high knowledge.

37. O God, learned persons use the things created by you as oblations and create more things. (We have to interpret oblations as similar to the seed we put into the ground. The seed disappears, but the plant comes and we get more than we what we sown. All oblations that offer have a similar effect). We have to use the knowledge of learned persons and create more useful things. These yajnas benefit our houses, wealth, remove idleness among us, make us strong and remove cowardice among us, and thus give us happiness in manyfold ways. O learned persons, perform yajnas and live happily in your houses with your family members.
